Another update on the winter storm expected this weekend.
This is shaping up to be a big-ticket event no matter how it shakes out. If we stay mostly snow, this could make a run at a top-10 storm for the Lynchburg, Roanoke, and Danville areas. But there is still a wide range of outcomes — it could be mostly snow, or it could involve a lot of sleet and freezing rain.
I’ve included a first-guess map, but at four to five days out, expect changes. I’ve also added a map showing just how massive this storm is. The European model shows that by 10:00 Saturday night, the entire state of Virginia has snow falling while the back edge of the storm is still in west Texas — nearly 2,000 miles away.
I also shared the National Blend of Models, which averages many different models together. I have rarely seen numbers this high this far out, but understand this can and will change.
Key interactions between energy coming from northwest Canada and energy off Baja will largely determine how much snow versus ice we end up with.
Either way, begin preparing now for several days of wintry weather followed by very cold temperatures.
